Gross premiums generated by European nonlife insurers slipped to €415 billion ($622.3 billion) in 2008, a less than 1% decline at current exchange rates compared with 2007, and the total number of insurance companies in Europe rose for the first time in a decade, according to the Brussels, Belgium-based Comité Europeen des Assurances.
